Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. prepares and motivates children to read by delivering free books and literacy resources to those children and families who need them most.
Founded in 1966, RIF is the oldest and largest children's and family nonprofit literacy organization in the United States. RIF's highest priority is reaching underserved children from birth to age 8. Through community volunteers in every state and U.S. territory, RIF provided 4.4 million children with 15 million new, free books and literacy resources last year.
All RIF programs combine three essential elements to foster children's literacy: reading motivation, family and community involvement, and the excitement of choosing free books to keep.
RIF's accomplishments are due in part to the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education, corporations, foundations, community organizations, and thousands of individuals.

Donor of the Month
RIF is pleased to honor the Pitney Bowes Foundation as the March Donor of the Month! In 2009, the Pitney Bowes Foundation collaborated with RIF to provide additional resources for RIF programs and to create a program that would engage a community around a family literacy event.
To accomplish these goals, RIF and Pitney Bowes created a communications-themed book collection, activity guide, and supporting materials which were provided to 50 RIF sites in New York City and Indianapolis. Additionally, Pitney Bowes hosted a family literacy night in Corona, Calif., where parents and children from the community spent time reading together and participating in literacy activities. Pitney Bowes employees were key to the success of the event, eagerly pitching in to set up the event, greet attendees, lead read-alouds and activities, chat with parents, and help to put the school back in order for the next day.
