Carmen Lomas Garza now lives in San Francisco, but it is her native town of Kingsville, Texas, that is depicted in her paintings.
Drawing on her experiences in a close-knit Mexican-American community, her paintings focus on the joyful memories of everyday life with her family, as well as community festivals and events.
She has won the Pura Belpré Medal for outstanding Latino literature for children three times: for Family Pictures in 1996, for In My Family/En Mi Familia in 1998, and for Magic Windows/Ventanas mágicas in 2000.
